Toolchain Engineer Vacancies

SN Systems provides software development tools designed for game development. These tools include a C++ toolchain suite and a range of debuggers, profilers and other tools. The development tools cover the entire game development lifecycle. SN Systems provide development tools for all Sony Computer Entertainment Group’s game platforms.

The current vacancies are in the Toolchain team, based in Bristol, UK or San José, USA. We are actively looking for software engineers who have experience in compiler, linker or other toolchain component development. We also welcome applications from less experienced software engineers who have an interest in working in this area of software engineering.

The Toolchain team develops and supports toolchains for all of Sony Computer Entertainment Group’s main platforms. The main components of the toolchain are:

  • C++ Compiler designed specifically for game development
  • Program linker designed and optimized for game development.
  • Utility programs to support game development such as assemblers.

The challenge in tools for game development is to handle very large complex programs which have difficult performance and runtime size constraints. We also have strong quality requirements and consider testing to be as important as code development.

Part of the role is support of world leading games developers by helping analyze and resolve complex program behaviour. We look for candidates with strong problem solving skills as well as good communication skills for this aspect of the role.

Occasionally you may be required to attend conferences/exhibitions in the US, Japan or Europe.

These roles provide lots of opportunity for analysis/problem solving and customer contact.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Computer science or related degree.
  • At least two years industry experience

Skills required:

Essential

  • Strong skills in C and C++ programming. The dominant language used in the games industry is C++, often at a very advanced level.
  • Strong problem solving abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Software development on a Microsoft platform, use of Visual Studio for development and debugging.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of microprocessor architectures, concepts such as cache behaviour, register sets for example.
  • Proven experience of developing compilers with a focus on optimization technology, or genuine interest in this area.
  • Software toolchain development.
  • Embedded program development.

General

  • Candidates must be motivated and adaptable to work in this fast moving industry.
  • All candidates will need to demonstrate enthusiasm, good communication skills, and have a firm idea of the attributes you could bring to SN Systems.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the country to which they are applying.
